The Origins of Dog Whispering

Early man must have used calm communication to create trust with the

Wild Gray Wolf (Canis lupus).

Dog Whispering is a way to open up the channels of communication between Us (Homo Sapiens) and todays Domesticated Dog (Canis Lupus Familiaris) using methods Dogs actually understand.

They are all methods that owners/handlers of any age male or female can use easily and humanely in a calm quiet manner, just as wild dogs & wolves in packs would.

There are commercial methods that we at

The Dog Whisperer Limited

frown upon.

Alot of the “commercial” methods cause the dog to be forcefully placed into submission.

Any attempt at physical correction using the wrong intensity (lots of pulling/tugging) or at the incorrect moment would be unhelpful at best, for proper development.

Timing is everything with these wonderful creatures.

It’s imporant to note that without correct timing they will not understand your instructions as you wish them to.

Methods used by

The Dog Whisperer Limited

are:

  • Non – Confrontational
  • Passive
  • Motivating
  • Peaceful
  • Using Classical and Operant conditioning
  • Use of Clicker Training Techniques

We use a host of other basic handling/training techniques that are essential to healthy canine development and welfare.

Dog training and ownership is more than just therapeutic, it is also very rewarding to see a well behaved dog and after hours/days/weeks of patient calm repetitive training, this is what they become, naturally.

Where did it come from?

Originally back in the early 18th century there was an Irish “Horse Whisperer”, by the name of Daniel Sullivan, who had a “mysterious technique” for rehabilitating troubled horses.

Most of his training techniques were passed on until the 1850’s, then lost until a brief mention in the 1950’s followed by a novel by Nicholas Evans in 1995 and then a film The Horse Whisperer, with Robert Redford in 1998.

Today there are many trainers and equine workers, who use the name Horse Whisperer, and it is believed that is the origin of the popular term

Dog Whisperer

There are many people using that name to describe what they do, some are more widely known than others.
