This has to receive a mention this as it seems to be a misused or at best, a misunderstood technique.
Unless in a controlled environment, with a professional, after all the other worldly documented humane techniques have been applied to no avail, and the dogs only next step is try this technique or be euthanized, should you consider proceeding with this.
Besides that it should NEVER be practiced.
It is the form of rolling your dog in its side or back and pinning it down by its neck, usually in a forceful manner.
We DO NOT believe that this is a good technique, and would spend slightly longer if need be, practicing more humane techniques but still just as firm with the right intention and intensity.
This should be done by using one or a variety of any of the
“Distraction Techniques”
Please note, The Dog Whisperer Techniques, recommended and practiced by Dog Whisperer World, do not support the “Alpha Roll”, as a form of training. It is not only very unpleasant, and possibly a dangerous experience for both Dog & Trainer/Handler.
Science has proven more modern intelligent techniques exist to develop higher positive reactions, for long-term positive association & development.
Imagine the further development issues that could easily arise.
For example your dog may imitate you, and might practise on other dogs, or other humans, or become even more aggressive than before, as it is a type of “to the death move”, not good!!.
Alpha Roll was apparently invented from short-term studies on wolf packs in the 1940’s. It is supposedly teaching the dog that you are the Alpha, and that your dominance should be respected (which could be seen to dominate).
The word “Alpha” when referring to a pack leader is one who may be considered dominant through stable calm, & assertive energy, catering for the pack needs:
Food,
Water,
Shelter,
Education,
Warmth,
Guidance,
Protection,
Love,
Affection,
and overall responsibility for the pack behaviour.
Treat them well and these innocent creatures will reward you gratefully.
